When a Wellness Weekend Goes Wrong: Lessons in True Luxury
We were interested in a wellness weekend in Atlanta, Georgia. I was browsing Expedia.com, eager to use the cash my boyfriend and I had accumulated in our One Key rewards program. A $100 discount on a quick getaway to reset felt perfect. However, even as a seasoned travel advisor, I fell into the trap of hastily booking a last-minute vacation — and it turned out to be a disaster. Planning a trip when you’re burnt out doesn’t yield the best results, and I was definitely running on fumes.
False Expectations
The images of the suite featured a king-sized bed, large 55-inch screen TVs, a beautiful sink vanity, and an expansive hotel lobby with modern art deco interior designs. At first glance, it was the most beautiful suite I’ve ever seen. The Starling Atlanta Midtown Hotel looked promising, and I was so ready to just get away and leave my troubles behind.
However, our difficulties began as soon as we set out. After sitting in traffic for two hours longer than expected and dealing with a minor fender bender, we finally arrived in Atlanta. I spent 30 frantic minutes on Google Maps searching for the perfect parking spot adjacent to the hotel. The Starling Hotel’s website mentioned valet parking but didn’t provide information on other options. Once we arrived, we found a garage connected to the hotel, but it took us 25 minutes to locate the entrance in 30-degree weather.
We quickly checked in and ran out to grab something to eat at Pappadeaux Seafood Kitchen. We returned with our leftovers and remembered that hotels do not openly supply microwaves. I called the front desk, and no dice. Cold leftovers it is…
Surprise Expenses Aren’t Fun
The following day, we quickly ran downstairs for breakfast. We walked in and were not greeted. We weren’t sure if we should seat ourselves, if there were a menu or a buffet, or if it was included in our room. I am not shy when requesting service, so I quickly approached a staff member to ask. She invited us to sit and asked what our room number was. She even offered to check to see if it was included. Instead, she served us and quietly left a bill for more than $75 on the table. The amount wasn’t a big deal, but that breakfast wasn't worth $5.00. It was less than underwhelming — it was an utter disappointment.
Additionally, they did not validate the parking for the garage where we parked, despite it being connected to the hotel and the complex. I was surprised to find that the hotel did not have its own parking garage, and the daily parking fee exceeded $40.
The Lackluster Quality
The furniture was scratched, the chair legs were bent, and the suite was 50% wasted space. The suite was not functional for travelers who enjoy suites. The cheap furnishings barely filled the space and made it warm an inviting. The dining table was a high-top table with stools. Since it's uncomfortable, it's not my favorite place to sit, eat, or play cards. Both televisions were adjacent, so watching them simultaneously would've been impossible.
Oh, and get this… the shower and the bedroom had an adjacent tinted glass wall that was completely see-through. I had to watch my boyfriend take a sh*t that morning because it is incredibly transparent, and it does not block the light so I did not sleep soundly. The bathroom light shines right into your eyes. It was the most bizarre thing I've ever seen in my life.
On a positive note, the elevators were fast, and we were on the 24th floor. However, there was an elevator shaft (Elevator Shaft F) that you could see straight through from the outside, and this made the hallway extremely cold, especially since it was one of the coldest weekends of the year. To be honest there was no shaft. It was just two elevator doors that led outside on each floor. Overall, the rooms felt overdesigned, akin to putting lipstick on a pig. In the elevator area, there was an ottoman with an unsightly dark stain on it.

What Is Fake Opulence?
This situation made me remember the concept of fake opulence in the travel industry. Hotels are now overcrowded with eager tourists. Your space constantly feels invaded, and there are no decent places to really feel like you're in a private and intimate setting. Major resorts being marketed by online travel agencies have over 500 - 1000 rooms per resort, which can really make you feel like you're paying for the hype.
Fake luxury is all about appearances without depth. It’s the hotel with lavish chandeliers but lackluster service or the “luxury villa” with a gorgeous exterior but no soul. This façade plays on expectations, leaving travelers feeling underwhelmed and disconnected.

In today’s travel landscape, the illusion of luxury is everywhere—grand resorts packed with 500+ rooms, flashy exteriors, and Instagram-worthy aesthetics that lack depth and authenticity. Fake opulence offers appearances without substance, leaving travelers feeling disconnected and underwhelmed. I most certainly did not enjoy my weekend and went home early to my boyfriend's dismay.
